Silk is soft and low weighted fabric. This is a natural protein fiber, some form
of which can be woven into textiles. In silk fabric colour and texture are
amazing and attractive. The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin
and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. The best-known silk
is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori
reared in captivity.
Silks were originally
reserved for the Emperors of China for their own use and gifts to others, but
spread gradually and socially, and then to many regions of Asia. More than 60
countries around the world the world produce silk, but the bulk of production
is concentrated in only a handful of places – China,
India, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
