The word “Canvas”
is derived from the 13th Century Anglo –French Canevaz and old
French Canevas. Both may be derivatives of the vulgar Latin cannapaceus for
“made of hemp” originating from the Greek κάνναβις (cannabis)
Canvas is an
extremely durable Plain-woven fabric used for making Shoes, Sails, Backpacks, Shelters, Tents, Marquees, Cloths etc. By
blending cotton with Synthetic fabric. Canvas become a water resistant or even
Waterproof, making it a great outdoor fabric. Canvas comes
in two Basic types Plain & Duck. Canvas fabric is a Thicker, useable
fabric. The threads in duck canvas are more tights woven. In United State
Canvas is classified in two ways by weight and by a graded number system. By weight
it means ounces per square yard. The numbers run in reverse of the weight so a
number 10 canvas is lighter than number 4. Modern canvas is usually made of
cotton or linen.
Canvas also used for Painting. Canvas has becomes the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. It was used from the 14th century in Italy but only rarely. In painting Canvas is a most important part.
